ESPA. Ecosystem Services for Poverty Alleviation Programme

Unregulated urban expansion disturbing the recharge zone for Lake Nanital in the north of India. An ESPA project assisted local communities to challenge the legal basis of land management decisions that were resulting in degradation of this important water resource for the community and tourist industry.
(see ESPA impact note)

From 2010 through to the end of 2016 I was the Director of the UK’s Ecosystem Services for Poverty Alleviation programme. My responsibility of providing strategic leadership to the programme and its projects was combined with a role of acting as a global ambassador for ESPA and its research.

Over the nine years that ESPA ran (2009 to 2018) the programme had a number of significant outcomes. Much of this is documented on the ESPA website, in the synthesis book and programme highlights report.

ESPA leadership: Results
  • Establishment of the programme, defining strategies for research, impact and communication.
  • Development and implementation of customised systems to commission ESPA research and then for reporting and analysis
  • Working with projects to promote scientific excellence, relevance and impact
  • Building global partnerships that enhanced the contribution of developing country researchers and their development partners.
  • Leading a programme’s commitment to building development impact
  • Ensuring that ESPA was seen as an innovative and impactful model for global challenge research that has had significant impact on other investments including the UK’s Global Challenges Research Funds.
